How Deck Stain Coverage Works
The formula is simple: area times coats divided by coverage rate. Coverage rates vary by wood species and stain thickness, so always compare your result with the label on your exact product.
Gallons = (Length × Width × Coats) ÷ Coverage Rate
Common Mistakes
- Ignoring railings and stairs (they can add 15–30% extra area).
- Buying exactly the raw amount with no margin for absorption differences.
- Skipping cleaning and prep, which increases waste and uneven finish.
Tip: Buy one extra quart if your result is near a whole-gallon boundary.
